Purple Sea Urchins

Purple Sea Urchin

(Strongylocentrotus purpuratus)

by Mable

The purple urchin lives in holes in rocks. They live in low tide zones from Alaska to Cedros Island, Mexico. They have short spines.

They are greenish color when they are young and purple when adult. That is how you find young ones and adult ones. They spawn in the spring.

They look like flowers to me. It also looks like a purple porcupine! It's round like a ball.

Tiffany adds:

I find the purple urchin very interesting, especially because of the way it looks. A purple urchin'sGreen Anemone body is 10 cm across. It's color is red to purple. It has short spines, which are it's protection. On the outside, it's appearance is like a plant or some kind of weird, big flower. When you see a purple urchin, you cannot see its face, because it is hidden on the inside.

Just like any other living thing, urchins have predators, and itself is a predator. It's enemies (predators) are sun stars and sea otters. Purple urchins are most likely found in low tide zones from Alaska to Cedros Island and Mexico. If that is where it lives, its predators most probably live there too!
