rock prickleback

Rock Prickleback (Xiphister mucosus)

by Aaron

This animal looks like an eel. It takes five years to mature. It is about 12 cm long, and usually blackish gray. It has two black bars on its back and two black bars behind its eyes. In the winter it spawns, attaching its eggs to the rocks. Males are smaller than females. It eats sponges, fish and crustaceans. It eats lots of algae. It can be found under boulders in pools. Its in the mid to low tide zones. It lives from Alaska to Point Conception.

I found this prickleback under a boulder in a pool. It was very fast. I tried to grab it but it dashed back under the boulder. We had to completely pick up the rock so it had nowhere to hide. It was in the mid to low tide zone. It had crabs, seaweed and other plants around it. The one I saw was about seven cm long, and dark green in color. It wasn't moving until we scared it.
