Adobe Pagemill Tutorial: Part 2

Images

1. Make sure the image you want to use is

  • in either GIF or JPEG format
  • in your image file in your public_html folder

2. Click on the graphic button at the left of the toolbar on top of your title. This will open a dialog box allowing you to locate and select the image you wish to place. Make sure the image is in your image folder.

IF the image is a GIF, you can make the background transparent. Here's how. Double click on the image while holding down the command button. This will open up the image in its own box. Alongside it will be some different tools. One is the "magic wand." If you select this tool, then touch it to the background of the image, it will become transparent. Magic!

You can also modify the size or proportions of the image here, but it is better to do this in Photoshop, because even if you reduce the size of the image by half, those viewing the page must download the original full-size graphic.

To move the image around on your page, you can click and drag it. To align it left, right or center relative to text, use the buttons at the top right. Be patient -- it takes some playing around with.

You can get your images from anywhere: off the web, a scanner, digital camera, or clipart CDROM. To be used on the web, it must be a GIF or JPEG, as mentioned above. Photoshop can change an image into a GIF.

For practice, you could download some images from the web, such as these.

If you want a title to show as the image loads, select the image, then in the Inspector, put your cursor in the box next to where it says Alternate Title, and type in the title you choose. Some viewers actually turn off the graphics to allow their browser to work faster. This lets them know what they are missing.

Links

Links take you to a different page, either within your site or elsewhere on the web.

To make a link within your own site, first select the text or image you want people to click to go to the new page. Next place your cursor in the Link To: space at the bottom of the page. Type in the name of the file as it is in your public_html folder. This page, for example, would be called pagemill2.html. Hit the return key, and your link is there.

To make a link to a site elsewhere on the web, do the same thing, only type in the whole address, starting with http://

Tables

Tables are a neat way to organize text and images on your page. To insert a table, click on the 3x3 box on the center toolbar. You will get a dialog asking you how many rows and columns you want. You can even make the table invisible by selecting a border = 0 setting. Make your choice and hit OK . You can place images and/or text in each cell as you choose. You can use this to format your entire page. The page you are looking at is in a one row, two column table, with the navigation bar on the right in one cell, and the main text on the right.
