Steps to take if you are interested in becoming National Board Certified: 1. Request a free application by calling 1-800-22TEACH. The assessment fee for the 2001-2002 school year is $2300. 2. Complete the application and
send it with a nonrefundable check for $300 payable to NBPTS
to: 3. Enroll in the OUSD National Board Support Project. (email Wilma Enriquez at wenrik@ousd.k12.ca.us) If you are participating in an organized National Board support group such as Stanford, Mills or Cal State Hayward, Oakland will reimburse you for $500 of your application fee. Provide a receipt to the Division of Teaching and Learning. OUSD will also offer additional support to teachers at low performing schools. 4. Decide if you are going to apply for the California Candidate Subsidy Program. To apply for this subsidy, candidates must already have sent in their NBPTS application and a $300 nonrefundable application fee. The Candidate Subsidy Program will provide $1,000 of the $2,300 application fee for eligible candidates who apply. The number of subsidies available will depend on funding allocations determined in summer 2001. (See the Calif. Dept of Ed web site) 5. Find a support group to work with. Inform OUSD of your choice. (Email Wilma Enriquez at wenrik@ousd.k12.ca.us) 6. As soon as your portfolio materials arrive, begin reviewing the standards and portfolio entries and planning for the year. Many teachers have found that they had to limit other "extra" commitments in order to be successful with the process. 7. Send the remaining application fees to the National Board by January 31, 2002: $1,000 if you have received a subsidy or $2,000 for all other candidates. Make sure you access available OUSD support for this. 8. Complete and mail your portfolio to NBPTS so that it is received by the due date of your certificate area. After receiving your portfolio, NBPTS will mail you information about the one-day Assessment Center. National Board of Professional Teaching Standards: California
