![]() ![]() by Amelia Hermit crabs are 2 cm wide. It has red antennae, with blue and white stripes on the legs. It's kind of hairy. Most of the time it finds a turban shell and goes in. Hermit crabs are in the mid or high tide zone. Female hermit crabs carry their eggs in or kind of close to its stomach and protect them by putting them in their shell. They have to fight for their shell and protection. Hermits eat almost anything and you can find them from British Columbia to Mexico. When I went to the shore I saw two hermit crabs (big ones) carrying a smaller one. I thought the big one was supposed to go into another shell. But they are family and the smaller shell is too small for the big one. A hermit crab is about 2 cm wide. Hubert adds: To me it was a scary experience holding it, but it was fun looking at it. I was gentle with it, because maybe if I wasn't, it would have bit me. The hermit crab is hairless. Some worms stay in the hermit's shell so when the hermit crab eats food, the worm will share the food too! Hermit crabs are located from Alaska and Puget Sound, and some to Mexico. The Hermit crab is not a true crab. It belongs to the shrimp family. *For extra credit, can you find the Tidepool Sculpin (a small fish) in this picture? |
