Flower Faces Project

Part A: Basic Images

1. Set your camera to Macro (with the menu button, then choose a little flower icon)
2. Fill the frame with a large, circular flower, such as a sunflower. Place the flower against a plain white background so it stands out.
3. Take several pictures.
4. Take a few close-up pictures of your face, or have a friend do so.
5. Download and save both pictures to your computer.

Part B: Prepare your flower

1. Review the pictures of the flower and choose the sharpest.
2. Open the image in Photoshop
3. Under the Image menu, select "Image Size."
4. Change the resolution to 300 pixels per inch, and make the image size 8 X 5 inches or smaller (the smaller your image, the faster your computer will do these operations.)
5. The flower is now part of a rectangular image. To make a circular image, Use the Marquee tool (The top tool on the left side) to select a circle on your flower. To get a perfect circle, hold the shift key down as you expand the circle over your flower. This will take some practice.
6. When you have the circle where you want it, go to the edit menu and select copy (or hit "command c".) The picture of your flower is now stored on the clipboard.
7. Go to the file menu and select New. Notice that the size of the new image has been chosen to be the size of the image you have stored in the clipboard.
8. When the new window for your new image appears, go to the Edit menu and select paste (or hit "command v".)

Part C: Prepare your face

1. Review the pictures of your face and choose your favorite.
2. Open the image in Photoshop.
3. Make your face a circular image by following Steps 5 - 8 in Part B.

Part D: Sizing the face
4. We need the circle face to fit into the center of your flower, so we need to adjust the size. Open both the flower image and the face image. Paste the face image onto the flower image, and center it. If it is too big, delete it from the flower image and go back to the face image.
5. Resize the face image by going to the Image menu and selecting Image Size. If it is just a little too big, just make it a little smaller. Copy it to your clipboard, go back to the flower image, paste it on, and go back and forth until it is perfect.

Part E: Blending the Face edges
1. We want a soft edge to your face, so it blends into the flower. This is very easy to do. Go to your correctly sized face image, and go to Image menu, select "canvas size." Make the canvas size 10 pixels bigger than it is already.
2. Choose the Select wand (second from the top on the right side). Move it over the white background outside your face image and click. This should select the white background.
3. Go to the Select menu, and choose "feather." Enter 10 pixels when it asks for
the "feather radius."
4. Hit the "delete" key. You can hit it more than once to fade the edges more.
5. Now go to the Select menu and choose "inverse." This will select your face.
6. Go to edit and choose copy (or hit "command c.")

Part F: Putting Face and Flower Together
1. Open your flower image. Go to the edit menu and choose "paste"
(or hit command v). this should paste your face onto the flower
2. Center your face.
3. If you like, you can feather the edge of the flower now, by following steps 1 4 in Part E above.
