Once when I was in the first grade, I found swallowtail caterpillar eggs in some fennel. I knew they were caterpillar eggs because I learned about them in Teacher Ruth's class, and she had a lot of caterpillars. I took the eggs home and I put the fennel in a glass of water.

I waited for a long time until they hatched. When they hatched the caterpillars were black and white.

When they were scared, they put out these orange lines coming out of their heads, and they smelled bad, to keep predators away.
