 The Bug Hunt Begins!

 The First Oakland Bug Hunt

September 20 six brave souls hiked into the wilds of Marin County to uncover creatures filled with venom and covered with hard armor.

This was the first Oakland Bug Hunt, led by UC Berkeley entomologist Eddie Dunbar. Eddie is a leader of the UC/OUSD project "City Bugs," Exploring Urban Biodiversity, which includes research by students at Oakland's McClymonds High School.

In October, Eddie joined my classes for an urban bug hunt at nearby Sausal Creek. You can see photos of this hunt here.

Accompanying Eddie this day were Oakland middle school teachers Richard Kinst and Anthony Cody, and Anthony's wife Kristin Prentice, and their two sons, Rowan and Alexander.

Entomologists by large rotten tree This large dead tree offered a home to many insects. We found two small scorpions under the bark, who made their meals of small insects.

At right, Rich Kinst is taking a picture of a millipede Rowan found under a rotting log.
