Bat Star photo

Bat Star (Patiria miniata)

by Kevin

The bat star is about 10 cm across and it eats sea stars, tunicates and algae. It lives in the low tide zone. The scaly arms are variable, solid or mottled red. When I saw it, it looked like a Pokemon, an evolved Staryu. This bat star is green, slippery, with sharp arms and a soft skin. The one we found has six arms, but the one in the book only has five. I think it was in the low tide zone, just sitting there, near the fish and the sea anemones.
