7th Grade Life Science Curriculum
Unit 2: Cell Biology

Microscope Use

Lesson 1: Cartwheels

Objectives:
After completing the lesson, students will be able to describe how the image of an object changes as a magnifying lens is moved further away from it.

Key Questions:
What makes a good magnifier?
What happens to objects when you magnify them?

Overview: This activity will allow students an opportunity to investigate how a convex lens changes the shape and appearance of an object.

Time required: 1 class session

Materials: magnifying glasses, newsprint or other printed material

Procedure: See "What to Do" section in The Microscope Book, pg. 14, ahead of time in order to provide appropriate instructions and data sheet. An alternative activity would be to use water drop lenses instead of a magnifying glass. See the next page for directions.

Assessments: Students describe how a letter or object will change when using a magnifying lens.

Homework: Students create a list of household items that might magnify or change the image of an object.
