7th Grade Life Science Curriculum

Unit 1: Intro to Science, Measurement and the Human Body

Overview of Unit

Life Science is the study of living things. This first 7th Grade Life Science Unit introduces students to the background, tools, and processes used by scientists to study living things.

This includes defining science, developing basic scientific inquiry skills and asking students to observe their bodies, setting the stage for further exploration of human body systems in later units. The combination of experiments, demonstrations, discussions, and readings sets the stage for student learning through out the year.

The beginning of the school year can be unpredictable. Balancing class loads often results in students transferring between classes in the first few weeks. With this in mind, the low maintenance activities in this unit help teachers adjust and develop rapport with students.

The unit only includes five weeks worth of activities allowing introductory classroom activities during the first week. While the lessons are written with a specific sequence in mind, they can be easily modified to accommodate the needs of individual students and classroom teaching situations.
