Notes from the Standards Workshop June 28, 2002

Next Steps for completing the Draft Standards for 4-8

  • We need to edit & make consistent the language in the draft. Certain examples of use and skill sets may still need tweaking.

  • Link examples of use to on-line lesson plans and resources that already exist.

  • Can we do something to make a tech link to Open Court? The district should purchase the CD-ROM for use in the classroom. Open Court should be told that they need to make more useful web links for the various themes on their website. If they don't, can we figure out some useful links to the themes, especially for our 4/5 classrooms?

  • Need clear process by which to adopt these standards by district. This group should be informed so that we can advocate for this plan.

Next Steps for Making the Draft Standards for 4-8 Useful

  • We need trainings to show ALL teachers how to use a 5-computer classroom with TV effectively. To show teachers how to effectively use the lab as a component of classroom technology teaching. (As opposed to just a few teachers in the grant.)

  • Should implement inservices (required) on new tech standards.

  • Need to print out a copy of 4 - 8 standards for all teachers, given to them in beginning of 2002-03 school year. Document should have web page URL on it.

  • We could create a program for teachers who need their 150 hours of professional development so that they receive a piece of tech standards and technology training.

  • Standards should be linked to every training we conduct here at the TLC.

  • Need to make print out available to every new hire for Human Resources. (The Summer Institute for new teachers takes place August 19 -27. One afternoon is about technology. We need to make sure that standards are in their materials and that they are talked about during this afternoon.) Iris will follow through on this item.

  • Now that we have standards, we should assess the technology needs of a classroom/school (Software, Hardware, Peripherals) in order to accomplish those goals. We need to make sure this stuff is purchased for the classroom and SUPPORTED! On-Site Support is necessary, not just the Site Tech.

  • Should we standardize hardware or software for schools? Some of us say yes.

  • Tech troubleshooting notes need to be included in every teacher's handbook.

  • Need understanding of what software is licensed and where you can get it. Should be included in Principal's and Site Tech's Handbooks. It should be a part of tech training. Suggestion that "Type to Learn" should be a district license.

  • Principals need conduct inventory of tech in teachers' classrooms at the beginning of the year and make helping teachers on tech a priority, especially for new teachers. Something like this should be in the principal's handbook

.Concerns We Have For the Future of Tech Standards:

  • Labs versus Classroom Use: Despite our commitment to classroom integration, labs are still useful places for learning some specific skills such as keyboarding, specific programs, and other skills.
